1966-ban alakult angol zenekar. Eredeti felállás: Syd Barrett ének, gitár;                             Roger Waters basszusgitár;                             Rick Wright billentyűsök;                             Nick Mason dob.

     1965-ben három volt cambridge-i diák együttest alapított Sigma 6 néven. A három lelkes ifjú Roger Waters, Rick Wright, Nick Mason építészeti tanulmányokat folytatott Londonban a regent Street Polytechnicben. Nemsokára nevet változtattak, így lettek ők a T-Set. Később csatlakozott az együtteshez Julietta Gale és Bob Close, valamint Roger Syd Barrett. Gale és Close távozása után Barrett két híres blues zenész - Pink Anderson és Floyd Counci - nevéből kölcsönözve - az ő zenéjükre emlékezve nevezte el a bandát Pink Floydnak Szerzeményeik megkomponálásában nagy szerep jutott Barrett kábítószeres tapasztalatainak és Waters érzékenységének. Koncertjeik, előadásaik alkalmával nemcsak zenéltek, vetítettek is, főleg színes diákat. A hangulat a kábítószerezés élményeit idézte, és gyakran aláfestő zene volt ez a tudattágító muzsika. Első nagyobb fellépésüket a Countdown Clubban tartották - öt és fél órán keresztül. Itt már a technikai viszonyokhoz képest óriási volt a hangerő. A zenekar másik kedvelt klubja az UFO volt, ahol a pszichidelikus zene rajongói gyűltek össze. Első lemezük 1967-ben jelent meg, borítóján a négy zenész elmosódott képe, a hátoldalon pedig Barrett rajza volt látható. Sajnos a töménytelen kábítószerezés lehetetlenné tette Barrett számára a további zenélést, ezért 68-ban megváltak tőle. Helyére barátja, David J. Gilmour került. Az együttes érdeklődését a film adta lehetőségek is felkeltették és a 60-as évek végétől pár évig folyamatosan hódoltak ennek a szenvedélyüknek. Az ő zenéjükkel élvezheti a nézőközönség az alábbi filmeket: More, Zabriskie Point, La Vallée, Criptal Voyager. Még 1969-ben jelent meg a dupla Ummagumma, amely lezárása korai korszakuknak. A kettős album első fele, a koncertrészletek a régi zenét idézik, a második rész elgondolásai zeneileg előre mutatnak. Az újabb korszak nyitánya az Atom Heart Mother. Ebben a hosszú, többtételes számban a rockzene olyan hangeffektus-skáláját produkálta az együttes, amelyet azelőtt még senki nem ért el, és azután sem sokan. A komolyzenei elemeken és szerkesztésen kívül, a női kórus használatán keresztül, az ipari zaj elemein át egészen a bluesalapokra épülő rockig minden értékes zenei forma előfordult benne. A következő évben két lemezük jelent meg. A Relics a régi sikerekből és a még meg nem jelent számokból összeállított válogatás. A Meddle pedig egy újabb remekmű. Ezúttal a lemez második oldalát foglalja el egyetlen szám, az Echoes. Még ebben az évben elmentek Pompei-be, ahol a füstölgő Vezúv lábánál lévő különleges hangulatot árasztó római kori körszínházban koncerteztek közönség nélkül. A jó akusztikájú amfiteátrumban új zenei hatást próbáltak ki - a tökéletes quadrophóniát. Ezután az újítás után, amit az Azimuth Coordinator tett lehetővé, a Floyd quadrophon koncertet adott, és lemezeinek is jelentek meg quadrophon változatai. A nevezetes pompei kocertet film is megörökítette. Ezután jött az 1973-as év, a rock egyik legjobb éve. Ekkor készültek a rock klasszikusainak legjobb művei, ekkor készült el az a Pink Floyd lemez, amelynek címe "The Dark Side Of The Moon" - A Hold sötét oldala. Az album mind a stúdiótechnika, mind a zenei kifejezés és megformálás világcsúcsa. A lemezt 10 szám alkotja amelyek azonban összefüggenek egymással, és így folyamatosan 44 perc muzsikát hallhatunk. Az album 27 éve szerepel a Bilboard 200-as listáján, mégpedig a legjobbak között. Több mint 38 millió példányt adtak el belőle. Az együttes nem felejtette el a régi gitárost, Syd Barrettet. Az ő életvitele, érzései, hallucinációi ihlették a Brain Damage című számot:

Ebben az időben a sikerek ellenére már problémák is jelentkeztek a PF közösségében. Bizonyos feszültség volt érezhető a tagok között. A túlhajszoltságot kipihenve készítették el következő, Wish You Were Here című LP-jüket, amely bizonyos vonatkozásban még az előzőt is felülmúlta. A következő lemezig nyugodt pihenés és a turnék sora váltotta egymást. Két év után megjelenik az Animals. A szövegek igen érdekesek, a közönség számára túlságosan elvontak. Az újabb lemezre ismét két évet kellett várni. 1979-ben egy majdnem teljesen Waters szerzemény látott napvilágot, a The Wall - A Fal. A lemez az első pillanattól kezdődően kirobbanó siker. Alan Parker rendezésében film is készült belőle, amely híven fejezi ki Waters gondolatait, érzéseit, véleményét a XX. századi világról. Gondolatilag és zeneileg is egységes, dramatikusan felépített mű, mely sokban már a rock operákra emlékeztet: The Trial, Another Brick In The Wall. A színpadi show, a turnék, s a fárasztó munka egyre jobban elcsigázta a tagokat, akik között az egyetértés hiánya kezdett újból megjelenni. Sokáig nem készült el semmi. A folyamatos őrlődés oda vezetett, hogy a 80-as évek elején kivált az együttesből a billentyűs Wright. 1982-83-ban készült el a Final Cut, amely teljes egészében Waters alkotás. A zene, a szöveg, ének és a téma apja halálának emléke. Az album magas színvonalú, egységes alkotás de sok olyan rész van benne amely a Falra emlékeztet. A lemez elkészülte után a maradék tagok végképp összevesztek. 1986-ig a Pink Floyd tetszhalott volt. nem történet semmi. A tagok szólóban próbálkoztak, viszonylag kevés sikerrel. A Pink Floyd név használata kapcsán bírósági tárgyalás lett. Az eredmény: a Fal és előadási joga, valamint a lemezeladások 30%-a Waterst illeti meg, a Pink Floyd név pedig David Gilmour és Nick Mason tulajdona lett. 1986-ban Gilmour hívására a szólókarriert próbálgató Wright visszatért, és így - 20 vendégmuzsikussal közösen vették fel a Momentary Lapse Of Reason című lemezüket, majd egymás után kétszer világkörüli turnéra mentek. Felszabadultak Waters elnyomása alól, de elvesztették a legtermékenyebb szerzőt, aki az első időkben mindegyikükre jó hatással volt. Tipikus se vele, se nélküle eset állt elő, ami azonban nem zavarta a Pink Floyd legenda továbbélését és a további koncerteket, illetve lemezeket.
